damn you stupid splinter!!
Remember the time when you had a splinter in your finger and it hurts so bad. it hurts so bad you wouldn't dare take it out cause your finger hurts when you touch it. eventually you forget about it. the skin heals over the splinter and becomes embedded inside you. life goes on and you would think that it will never hurt again but there will be those few moments when you touch the part where the splinter is and it still hurts as much as the first time it went into your finger. the pain is as intense and as vivid as it was during the very first time and you regret for not have pulled out the splinter earlier and now that the skin has healed over it, you might never be able to pull it out again. you have to live with the occasional flood of pain at the tip of your finger. the only way to get it out now is to cut away the skin that healed and delve deep into the wound, pluck out that nasty bugger.
i'm experiencing my occasional metaphorical flood of pain.
somebody reminded me that the one who inflict the pain will not bother to pluck out the splinter, so i either let it continue to stay there and continue to experience the periodical hypes of intensity or pluck up the courage to remove it once and for all.
it sucks when matters are not resolved. it sucks even more when you know that it's bugging you so much and the one who inflicts the pain probably doesn't even give a hoot about it. well, afterall the splinter is in me so it'll probably hurt me more than it hurts the one who caused it upon me.

YONG TAU FOO!!~
Kudos to my mum who is of hakka heritage.
She makes awesome yongtaufoo. =D
Hakka yongtaufoo = mix of pork and fish for filling
made yongtaufoo a week ago but haven't found the time to post up my pictures!
extremely proud of myself for this is my very first attempt.
here i share with you my mama's recipe. =)
soup base:
ingredients:
- dried anchovies (i used the ikan bilis stock cube for convenience sake. XD 1 and a half cubes of that)
- 1 cup soyabeans
- a couple of shallots (minced)
- 2 slices of ginger
- 2 tbsp of oil
- a pot of water? (hmm...i would say about 5 medium size bowls)
1. heat up oil in pot and put in ginger and shallots. fry till golden and fragrant.
2. pour in soyabeans and anchovies and give it a quick fry.
3. pour in the water (fire on high) and let it boil before turning fire to low and allow it to simmer for at least an hour.
*meanwhile prepare your yongtaufoo while allowing flavours to infuse into soup*
yongtaufoo:
ingredients:
- eggplant (aubergines)
- dried mushrooms (soaked and cleaned)
- tofu
- taupok (fried beadcurd)
- dried beancurd skin
- mackerel fish paste (available in asian gorceries or wet markets)
- minced pork
- 1 tsp corn starch
- salt and pepper (you can use bittergourd and chilli if you are looking for extreme flavours)
1. blend fish paste and mince pork, add salt, pepper and corn starch into mixture. mix well.
2. put mixture on/into your tofu/eggplant/dried mushrooms etc.
3. heat up pan with a little oil and lightly fry the yongtaufoo. gives the yongtaufoo its shape before you put into the soup.
4. throw everything into soup!! =D allow it to boil for 15min or so.
5. serve and enjoy!!
***
this is such an easy, foolproof recipe but pretty time-consuming. you may wanna rope your housemates or family in to help you stuff the filling. =D definitely worth the effort though. ENJOY~~

Translated message from a Chinese Sendai tsunami survivor
(I’m translating a Chinese message from this link: http://ww1.sinaimg.cn/large/6c8010d1jw6df5rjhq5v1j.jpg
Please excuse my translation skills. I know I’m not 100% accurate so feel free to correct me if necessary. But the point gets across pretty clearly.)
This is a mail from my friend
She asked me to post for her
She is in Sendai, Japan
Rescued early morning today
After being trapped for 8 hours
I hope you can finish reading
Hope you are a good person
Respect others
Even if you want to insult
Please don’t leave traces here
——————————
Aren’t we all comrades?
Just because you are in China
Just because you don’t have family or friends in Japan
You can say words like let Japan sink?
The Chinese people in Japan aren’t people?
What is hate
Who can tell me what hate is
When you’re standing on a roof surrounded by sea water
When in that water, is your home
When in that water, are your friends and family
Do you still know what hate is?
He kills you, so you must kill him
Then I think patriots with this kind of ideals
Can go to Japan for school or work
Then choose a rush hour
Take a knife, and kill whoever you seeI promise you can kill 100 people
I promise you can kill all types of people
I promise you can become the headline news
I promise you can fulfill your heroic dream
But you have to know
That in those 100 people
Maybe 10 were innocent children
Maybe 10 were house wives on their way home with groceries
Maybe 10 were workers working hard to provide for their families
Maybe 10 were elders
Maybe 10 were youngsters hanging out
Maybe 10 were part-timers delivering take-out
Maybe 10 were people waiting for a bus
Maybe 10 were passerbys
Maybe 10 were those who don’t know why you killed them
Maybe 10 were Chinese
Even if there really is someone you want to kill
I advice you
Choose carefully before you act
I don’t know how the Nan Jin massacre looked like
I hate those Japanese soldiers
I hate that they killed our people
But today
I felt like I saw a massacre
Standing on the roof
If you want to see
Look carefully
Sendai is you patriots’ heaven
Corpses are right there
There are some torn limbs
There are whole bodies
If you have good eyes
You can see the small hands of young children
If you focus
You can even see some corpses hugging together
Do you have any sympathy
Do you know that before Mother Nature
We humans are one family
My boyfriend works at a company by the coast
Till now we haven’t been able to contact each other
I know, we can’t see each other ever again
Who told you that only the Japanese died in this tragedy
Who told you that this tragedy is karma
Yes
It’s karma
The man kind’s karma is here
Right now I want to live
I want to live well
Right here in Japan
I want to live well
I’m afraid that if I died
Many people will blame Japan
There were over 80 people stuck in the building
In those eight hours
It’s true that they treated me like a Chinese
I have anemia so I felt like I couldn’t go on
A house wife with a baby beside me
Gave me some milk powder
The 20 year old girl sitting beside me helped me find water
Just like this
I’m still here
Perhaps it wasn’t the milk powder that saved
But their spirits saved me
Among the 80 people there were only two cellphones that worked
Everyone let the Chinese call home first
I was the second who got to call
Everyone lined up to call home
Till the end, some Japanese friends didn’t get through to their families
They understood there was no need
They gave up
After around 4 hours
Some girls were hugging and sobbing
Some were crying to themselves
Some were lying on the ground looking up at the sky
Some were still trying to call for help
I sat by the wall
Looked at the Japanese house wife beside me
She kept talking to her baby
Soothing the child to sleep and breast feeding
I miss mom
I want to go home
There were too many things I can’t forgot in those 8 hours
I’ve never been through so much pain in my life
Thanks to God
I was saved
What else do I want to say
I know I have so much more to tell everyone
But I’m so tired
Tired from crying
After the corpses are found
I might have to go identify them
Mom
Can I not go?
I don’t want to go
I’m so scared
I’ll see so many dead bodies
I don’t want to go anywhere
I hope this mail will get sent
Please help me publish
Maybe a lot of people will scold us
But
I hope you will know a bit more
I’m tired
Too scared to sleep
There are still small quakes
I have nowhere to hide
Mom
Are you watching?
I’m alive
Please don’t worry
Sleep for a while

Before Mother Nature
Do we still have racial differences?

She was somebody's daughter, somebody's girlfriend, somebody's best friend.
She was a victim to the 8.9 quake in Japan. Like many others.
I cringed when she said,
"If you have good eyes

It's so disheartening.
But that little good in man still shines during the darkest hours as humanity surfaces in critical times like that.

开学咯!
开学咯!
school started a week ago but because first week is usually lax there was no need for me to be so uptight about it. nothing worth blogging about. pace will be picking up. by the way, i think it must have been extremely weird to see somebody with purple eyes. my studio coordinator kept staring at me the whole time when she was talking to me. i know it's polite to have eye contact during conversations but not that much right?!
she stared right into my eyes. *shy* haha! wth.
all the best for studio and school, people! =D

兔年快乐
gong xi fa da cai to yourstruly. X)
this is my 2nd post about lunar new year already but with cny lasting for 15days, how can i not blog more about it.
i reckon i have no mahjong/poker luck this year after losing at almost every game, whether it's with my family or with my friends.
anyway i picked up $2 on the floor today so i'm betting on it. my luck is already improving!!! bring it on NSW & NSN & YMX & MJG! RWAR!~ i'll see you guys at the mahjong table.
while i'm randomly spewing thoughts to fill up this boring post of mine, i've concluded that i make friends easily at the mahjong table. even though i did come to terms with the fact that i might be a very judgey judgemental person, i blame it on the game.
HAPPY 兔年 EVERYONE!~

HAPPY RABBIT YEAR!~
what an awesome way to end off the new year by putting some money into my pocket. headed down to the flea market with ljx, yh and jq. though sales were pretty slow for us, it was a good experience overall. =D

in short, i think it's better to sell pre-loves/clothes/bags during fleas, anything else and they sell slow.

so proud of myself for having dug out the "eyes" in such a neat manner. XD

4 pineapples cooking in a pot

all ready for the oven!

this is really ups there. XD

anyway, baked the whole day (literally) and only manage to fill up 5 containers. =.=

intended to head over to pulau ubin with cousins on sunday but the weather was cranky the whole week so i stayed at home and finished off what i had started. cooked the pineapple jam some few days ago and took it out to give it another good heating to dry up whatever last bit of juice there was in the jam.

2010 trip to Taiwan

i feel obligated to blog about my taiwan trip, not because i went to the flora expo but mainly why until now also no potential boyfriend!! LOL. i thought that will make excellent blogging material. XD
i have been burning to blog about it eversince we went to this 貔貅 gallery, as usual the overly enthusiastic salesperson will bombard you with the possibilities in life and whatnot and try very much to hardsell their product, in this case it's the 貔貅.
Ramblings aside, usually i don't fall for the "your-life-will-suck-if-you-don't-buy-a-貔貅" trick but this time it's different. the sales got all of us to write our names and then took out an almanac (whatever those are called, those can calculate the 生辰八字 one). she calculated our birthdates and the strokes in our names.
she told my dad that my brother and i both had extremely good names and asked if our names 有给人家算过的. my dad said no, he picked them himself. i would like to think that was a ploy to get him to buy the 貔貅. LOL.
i was kinda skeptical about it all until she said, i have no luck in love. CHIANG CHIANG CHIANG!~ 晴天霹雳! she also said something about me being very successful in my career and that my wealth will be bountiful but my love will come late in life but he will be the one and that i'll marry a wealthy man.
i was like O_O. wah! need or not. i don't how she guessed the no love luck part, probably because my whole self was screaming the no love luck aura. but i like the "i-will-become-very-rich-and-will-eventually-marry-some-rich-guy-and-become-richer" idea. XD
aiyo...so i'll probably get married when i some rich old hag. =.= and he's like the ONE-AND-ONLY. i don't have a lot of options you know.
anyway, i still didn't buy a 貔貅. the 貔貅 wasn't going to change my love luck. it just helps to 闭邪 and balance out the 金木水火土 in our lives. apparently my mum and dad both have alot of 土 in their name but not enough 木 and 水. with land comes trees but trees need water. i just feel really intrigued by the whole 算命 thing, especially when ymx found her one in canada. XD
to all the 蛇 in the coming year, please avoid anything to do with traffic and roads. according to the almanac lady, 蛇在兔年会有high possibilities of mishaps on the roads. so anything to do with roads and traffic 尽量避免.

FAUXHAWK
i love dressup/costumes parties. i think i'm really deprived. hahaha. given my parents' conservative nature and my brother's negativity, it's very hard for them to accept what i did to my hair. >.<
tried out the fauxhawk that i'll be doing on ngshuning's rockstar-themed birthday party. sadly, the new hairspray i bought didn't have very strong holding power so that tuft of fringe keeps falling out of place. i need clarintan's hair straightener! XD

experimented with the makeup as well. silvery lipstick for maximum rocker look! XD i only did my left eye. my left eye looks distinctively bigger with makeup la! makeup does wonders. X)

super love the look! i can totally pull off the rocker look with the hair and makeup. i shall keep my attire a secret as for now. ohs...i modified my brother's belt chain into a choker! =D can't wait!

HAPPY BDAY ROOMIE~!
cooked a spread on tuesday. unfortunately i had promptly forgotten my camera. so no mouth-watering photos to look at.
thanks to verna+bra+jon+nic for lending me the kitchen and helping me. though i have to say jon did a pretty lousy job at wrapping the pulut inti. X)
popped by at their place at 12noon, after putting the glutinous rice to soak, i head over to subiaco to get groceries. came back with bagfuls of meat and what not.
prepared cereal prawn (best form of appreciation towards the chef is to clean out the plate), beef rendang (this time it was the best ever, i reduce the heat by not adding the amount of chilli as recommended by the recipe, and i had it cooking for 4hours, the meat came out to be so tender and melted in the mouth. *awesome-ness*), stewed pork belly and stirfry broccolli+cauliflower (ahtan's fav!!~). prepared pulut inti for dessert. for dessert no.2 we had chocolate lava cake! credits to verna. omg...the sinful pleasures of life. XD she also baked a lemon chiffon , most delightful.
intended to bring the food back home but it probably wouldn't have been a really smart option, having to drive the food back home and risk any spillage. so we "invited" ginny over instead, saying that we were going out for dinner but really, we were just going to have home-cooked food. though i spent nearly 6hours preparing everything, it was so fun!

makan sutra.
while i have been having a serious craving for pulut udang since forever, i finally got all the ingredients i need. banana leaves were hell expensive. =.= and they came frozen in a pre-packed 1kg pack. so i ended up paying$11 for a kilo of banana leaves which i barely used a fifth of.
anyways...decided to have a go have pulut inti as well since the glutinous rice was done the same and i had this tantalizing recipe. all i had to do was cooked the grated coconut in gula melaka. well ginny cooked the grated coconut while i cut the banana leaves.

copycat.
omgosh.
can't believe the work i've spent hours on and somebody just took it and copied it. O.o
i don't mind sharing what i know with you and you can have it drawn out the way you want it to. but hello??! u could have sketched out my drawing i can't be bothered. but what annoys me is a direct trace of my work. those who actually did not study are getting there and those who did are slapped with false accusations of not having studied. O.O
what is the world coming to?!
bwah~! reference is a nicer way to describe copying. (ok...i'm pretty annoyed right now.)
i am so not going to take it lying down when my work comes back only to have "PLAGIARISM" stamped all over it.
(it doesn't help when my stomach is feeling pretty upset right now. and woe to all the bitchy posts i blogged about.)

some kind of silent protest?!

feels good to be loved~
while i have been celebrating my birthday ever since june when i went back, it still feels really odd when my birthday is finally here.
thanks so much for the double surprise. =D
while the whole world have been planning for my birthday, i've been kept in the dark. as my aunt lias with ginny and ginny liasing with the archi peeps. i thought i was gonna spend my 21st just like any other birthdays. but nope, i had the most awesome birthday ever. it was mad sweet of my aunt to have planned me a surprise party. =)
***
(thurs) just as it strikes midnight, bra+verna+jon+nic+victor came over with the most sinful chocolate mudcake. well it was like 10min past midnight and i wasn't expecting anybody tbh. because bra had already made a reservation at a chinese restaurant on friday and he had asked the currie hallers as well.

sinful chocolate mudcake.
(fri) it stinks to know that school is not excused even if it's your birthday. so dragging myself out of bed, off i went to school for my morning tutorial. penyee and chusiang treated me to an indonesian lunch. and dinner was chinese. really lovely to see the currie hallers again. the after dinner activity is mahjong as usual. started off pretty badly, losing more than $20 only to recoup it back with my consistent 6tais and pinghus wins. i managed to have an overall winning of $3. *pats on my shoulder* lol.

most gorgeous cake ever. XD
(sat) having gone to bed only at 4am, i had to unglue myself from my bed and lug myself away from the warmth of my blankets. i was suppose to meet my aunt in town at 1030am. the plan was to have breakfast and then shop for my present and have lunch in town. during breakfast, my aunt excused herself and said she had to go back to her office. when she returned, we walked around town and then she suggested going back to my place. well, the whole breakfast in town thing was a ploy to get me out of the house while the archi peeps can come over to have the house decorated. and when my aunt excused herself to "go back to the office", she had secretly met up with ginny to pass her the food and collect the cake. absolutely surprised when i got back home, there was a spread on the table and everyone was in the house. totally in a state of shock as i tried to compose myself. it's so strange to be the last one to know. and then i was presented with the most gorgeous cake ever. felt so bad that my aunt had to spend so much but really appreciated all that she had done.

i didn't have a big party.
but i had the most awesome party ever. =D
thanks to everyone who made it possible.
special thanks to my aunt who put it all together.
(sorry my thoughts are so disoriented because everything happened so quickly and it just happened. i didn't even know how. XD)

ginny and i tried our hands at making sushi today.
came out looking pretty good, i must say.
i always knew i have a knack for sushi-making. a sushi chef in the making. XD
the colours of the pictures turned out pretty horrid. my sushi looks infested with green inedible stuff on the edge but that is just because i set my camera aperture wrong.

dear you,

My daughter’s letter to the man she will love someday
By Cathy Babao-Guballa
Philippine Daily Inquirer
RELATIONSHIPS ARE always a difficult terrain to navigate.
As a woman, you spend hours pondering—alone or with your girl friends—the intricacies of the human heart. You always hope and pray that the next generation will get it better than you did.
Below is a letter I found in my daughter’s website (I have her permission to share this). She wrote it to “the man I will someday love.”
I was expecting to read a gushing, romantic, idealistic tome. I was humbled instead by her sentiments. It’s filled with sensible expectations.
I pray that this will make every girl believe that hope does spring eternal, and even if your heart has been broken a few times, you can always put the pieces back together, and make it right the next time around.
Take your time. Don’t rush and don’t just “settle.” If it’s part of His plan, God’s best awaits you out there.
Letter
Dear You,
I will admit that sometimes I really do wonder if you exist.
There is a part of every little girl’s heart that envisions her prince charming. At age three, it is usually of a man who can save her from the wrath of an evil stepmother, wake her from eternal slumber or give her that true love’s kiss.
In elementary school, he becomes the boy with the least cooties, the one who’s willing to cross the playground to share his Oreos even if it makes him a target for the week of all the other boys.
Come high school, it’s that boy you stand with at prom, who your father stared down at the door, who provided you with an experience complete with photos you will cringe at a decade later, a corsage that yellows in the refrigerator, and a faded memory of a night that seemed almost too magical to be real.
Nineteen years into this life, however, and still unwilling to give my heart away, I am still that same little girl who hopes for her prince charming. And although I wonder why it has taken you this long to sweep me off my feet and whisk me off to your palace on horseback, I know that it is probably because meeting you will be better than any fairytale I could’ve read as a kid.
A couple of heartbreaks and a few years wiser though, I will admit that there are times when I question your existence. Because I have yet to meet the guy who makes me hear songs like “All My Life” or “A Whole New World” in my head when I see him does not mean I don’t hope that it’ll ever happen.
I may already know you or may still meet you someday—something I leave completely up to God because I’m pretty sure our story will be epic.
However, I can’t promise you that I’d make the world’s most perfect princess. In fact I’ll probably keep you on your toes and amuse you with my eccentricities—there are a lot of them. I’ll probably steal a bunch of your T-shirts and turn them into shirt dresses, or drive you slightly mad with my obsessive compulsivity and my need to fix your collar constantly.
I can promise to be your best friend however—that person you can rant to after a rough day, the hand you can hold when you get sad, or the person you can text when situations get awkward.
I’ll probably mess up your hair sometimes and hug you for too long, but that’ll only be because I absolutely adore you. I’ll bury my head in your shoulder during scary movies and make you feel like superman when you kill those flying cockroaches that really shouldn’t exist. I’ll cook your favorite food on your birthday and try my best to make friends with your mom.
I’ll respect your nights-out with the boys and make you seem like the perfect guy to my barkada. I’ll watch basketball or soccer games with you, and not complain when you cheer too loudly at the TV set.
I’ll know the difference between giving you space and being constantly there for you—even if it means sitting and playing video games with you or taking hot chocolate runs when it rains.
I’ll listen to your music and we’ll go on epic adventures together—seeing the world, taking awesome pictures, eating awesome food, and never running out of things to tell each other along the way.
I won’t be waiting for you to sweep me off my feet and take me on a magic carpet ride, because I know I won’t need anything like that to fall for you—I will love you for you.
You will be that someone to make goofy faces with in pictures, to lace fingers with when I’m lonely, and to take long walks under the stars with on the beach.
You’ll be the guy who takes me the way I am—and will laugh as I burst into Disney song or pick out pink wallpaper.
You’ll be that someone I envision a future with—us filling out visa forms as we travel the universe, picking out our first dog together and arguing about what to name it, or being snap-happy stage parents in our preschooler’s annual mini-plays. And I keep hoping that maybe someday when we find each other, you will become that someone whose smile I wake up to in the morning and the last one I speak to every night.
So to the man I know does exist, and who will help me maybe make sense of the world someday, this man I can’t wait to love. Please know that I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. But for now, I wait. Fingers crossed and palms held together, I hope that you’re out there somewhere, waiting for me, too.
With the hope I will be yours for always,
Me
